Selena Gomez Opens Up About Her Kidney Transplant
In September, superstar Selena Gomez announced that she had a kidney transplant over the summer. She revealed that her kidneys started to fail (a complication of lupus) and that her best friend Francia Raisa had donated one of hers to save Gomez’s life.
At the time, Gomez wrote on Instagram, “I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health.”
Then last month, Gomez decided to share even more about her experience. Sitting down with The Today Show‘s Savannah Guthrie, Gomez and Raisa talked about the life-saving procedure. Gomez said her kidneys were just “done” and that she got to the point where “it was really kind of life or death.”
Gomez and Raisa have both recovered from the surgery. In fact, Gomez performed this week for the first time since the procedure at the American Music Awards.
