In this video from Nada Sherif Selim, Amira El Shorbagy shares how her life has changed since she was diagnosed with lupus in 2009.

Spoken word artists, Shanelle, talks about her journey with lupus.

Once an accomplished swimmer who would spend six hours a day in the pool, Amira is now forced to watch from the sidelines. Lupus has caused her to move countries for treatment, put on 25 kilos (55 pounds) and undergo six months of chemotherapy treatment.

Amira most misses playing sports and being active, which she can no longer do as she suffers from debilitating fatigue. She’s struggled to come to terms with her new appearance, as well as the disease itself. She rebelled against treatment and began smoking and drinking.

Finally, Amira turned a corner and found solace in painting and acting. She is now living a healthy life and focusing on her future.
