Lupus Research Alliance Explains What Lupus Is

Many have heard the term “lupus,” but are unsure what the chronic disease is or how it affects those who suffer from it. In this video from the Lupus Research Alliance, Dr. Alana Levine talks about what lupus is and how it affects those who live with the disease by answering a few common questions.

Dr. Levine explains that lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease that can attack any organ of the body including the skin, heart, lungs, and kidneys. The disease is very gender-biased as approximately 90 percent of people living with lupus are women. The severity of lupus can range from very mild to very severe and can even become life-threatening. Because it can affect any area of the body, no two lupus patients experience the disease in the same way.
