An Introduction to the Two Main Types of Lupus
With more than 1.5 million lupus patients in the U.S., it’s surprising how little people know about this autoimmune disease. There is currently no known cure for lupus and the cause of it is still a mystery, although doctors now think there may be a genetic predisposition to the condition.

In this video from Lee Memorial Health System, Lindsey Fry (with the help of Dr. Ranju Wadhwa) explains the two main types of lupus: cutaneous lupus (discoid lupus), which is rarer and primarily affects the skin and joints; and systemic lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus), which is more common and usually more severe and can affect any part of the body, including the internal organs. The film examines some of the common symptoms of both types of lupus and how the flares can be managed.
