Kiva’s New CBD Cannabis Chocolate Bars May Help Lupus, Other Diseases, Anecdotal Research Suggests
Kiva Confections, a Californian medical cannabis company, has just introduced its new chocolate bars high in cannabidiol (CBD) and made from 100 percent whole plant cannabis. Recent anecdotal research has shown CBD to be an effective agent against systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and many other diseases.
CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the two main ingredients of the marijuana plant. Both CBD and THC belong to a unique class of compounds called cannabinoids. While several strains of marijuana are known for having and abundancy of THC, high-CBD strains are less common. But CBD has begun to draw attention from the medical community for its healing powers.
The plants used to make the chocolate bars are treated with whole plant philosophies, meaning the extract keeps the holistic compounds of the plants intact for the best synergistic healing benefits. The high-CBD levels allow for a sensation of relaxed calm, rather than the psychoactive high associated with pure THC, the company claims.
CBD has been shown to have anti-inflammatory, neuro-protective and anti-oxidant properties which can be used to fight degenerative diseases and aging.
CBD was poorly understand until recently. Medical marijuana growers had always focused on harnessing the highest concentrations of THC, breeding out CBD in the process, because they didn’t understand its potential healing properties.
In 2013, CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta released the first of two groundbreaking reports on the potential healing powers of marijuana, THC, and CBD. Before his investigation, Gupta was skeptical of the plant’s benefits and was against legalization. Afterward, he became a vocal advocate for the medical use of this natural resource.
Recent developments in laboratory studies allowed for the detection and breed of high-CBD varieties of cannabis which, when paired with a little THC for activation, open up a whole set of therapeutic options. Today, it’s possible to find anecdotal research on CBD suggesting that, besides lupus, it may also be effective against a host of diseases, including Alzheimer’s, chronic pain, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), inflammatory diseases, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, trauma, and others.
The chocolate bars are made by a collective of organic, chemical-free farmers in Mendocino County, California, and come in two flavors and potencies: 120 mg Ginger dark chocolate, and 60 mg Espresso dark chocolate.
