Keeping well when you have an autoimmune disease such as lupus is paramount, but day-to-day life can get in the way of staying healthy. In this video from Lifey Health, a patient with an autoimmune disease talks about some of the everyday things that trigger her flares.

This short video explains the prevalence of lupus and who it effects.

She starts by saying that stress is a major flare trigger and explains that not keeping a good diet–cheating even once because you feel well is likely to backfire–is essential to staying well. She also talks about how difficult it can be to not eat certain foods, particularly when they are foods that you really love. Not getting enough sleep is another major thing that can trigger flares. On the other hand, doing things that you enjoy can reduce stress and this helps to keep flares at bay.

Here are seven tips for newly diagnosed lupus patients.
